Father Kidane,

A true gentleman, always happy, positive, calm, kind and made everybody laugh.

So passionate and loyal to his school Gheez Rite – Who always wanted the best for the children and parents.

It was a pleasure and honour to work with him. I will miss him dearly.

Rest in eternal peace.

All my love

Rest in peace Fr Kidane and may God receive your soul in heaven.

We will not be the same without you and you left us so soon. There is no words to describe Fr.. Fr. Kidane loves everyone he meets equally and gives all his energy 24/7 to help others. Apart from his many decades of pastoral service as a priest, Fr. Kidane worked very hard to make sure Eritrean families here in UK get all the assistance they need, be it in advancing in education, relieving poverty, teaching children their mother tongue ,….etc.

I met Fr. in mid-1993, the year I came to the UK, at St. Francis of Assisi Church in Holland park. I used to sit at the last row and my first encounter with Fr. Kidane was when one Sunday he came out from the sacristy looking for deacons. Unfortunately the usual deacons were not there so he gave me a simple hand gesture and asked me to follow him to the sacristy. He asked me for my name and then he took out his diary and asked me to write my name, address and contact number. I never understood why at that time but he wants to make sure he could contact me in case I disappear from church for any reason. This is one example of the unique character of Fr. Kidane. Every person and soul is valuable and appreciated by him.

Since then he became not only my spiritual father and teacher, but my good friend. We had many jokes, laughs, …… I am glad to say I got involved in many projects he started and successfully accomplished at and around the church; to mention a few, the introduction of plan-giving at St. Francis of Assis Church many years ago and also the Geez Eritrean Saturday Supplementary School that he founded in 1993. As a board of trustee, I had the pleasure of working alongside Fr. Kidane for the past 16 years and we had countless meetings, fund searching and applying, phone chats… to make sure his Saturday school keep going. I miss his voice messages which always had the same message, “Adonay, eski cheer abeleley” (ኣዶናይ እስኪ ጭር ኣብለለይ).

All your accomplishments over many decades are testament to your legacy, and for us a strength. Your legacy will help us keep the memories we have from fading and you will always be remembered by all generations; children, youth and adults of Eritrean community.

May the almighty God rest your soul in peace.

Our deepest condolences to Fr. Kidane family!

Father Kidane Lebasi was a founder member of the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea Partnership of Supplementary schools. He helped set up the partnership which is still thriving today. He was known for his grace and humility as well as a serious determination to galvanise resources for the supplementary school, Gheez-Rite which he founded 28 years ago. He possessed that rare quality of being able to combine a sense of humour with a deadly seriousness when it came to addressing the issues of the world. We have happy memories of chatting over a nice lunch after our meetings. At Westway Trust he was a frequent visitor to our offices and we will miss his smiling face. Thank you for all you have done and may you rest in peace.

I would like to express my sadness over the death of my long term family/personal friend, Aba Kidane Labasi, whom I know all the way back from Italy. (when he was a student at St Thomas University of Rome.1976).

I know!! death is a part of our life, but to me (and all Eritrean Community) it is still difficult to believe that we lost such indispensable person.

Aba Kidane has done a lot to the wider Eritrean community (both in the UK & Italy) and made life easier for so many Eritreans in the past 45 years.

I should say, he was one-of-a-kind and can never be forgotten.

I am deeply saddened to hear the passing away of my classmate, Father Kidane Lebasi. We had been together at the Cistercian Minor Seminary of Keren for two-years and at the Cistercian Major Seminaries in Asmara (Eritrea) for six-years and and at the Cistercian Major Seminary in Mendida (Ethiopia) for another two -years.

We were ordained to the priesthood by the late Archbishop Asrate-Mariam Yemiru at the Cathedral of Nativity on July 27, 1975 in Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) along with our two other classmates - Father Berhane Mehreteab and Father Kbreab Ghebregziabher both Cistercian Monks who are both living in Italy.

Both of us in different time and with different reasons, left the Cistercian Order to join the diocesan presbyterate in different continents: Abba Kidane went to the United Kingdom and I am living in the United States in North America. Surprisingly the Church assigned both of us to the ethnic ministry in the two different countries of two continents as missionaries to our own people in diaspora.

I'm very proud to hear of his many pastoral accomplishments as a missionary among his own people in the United Kingdom. And I was so impressed with his former parishioners who are now deeply mourning at his untimely departure from this world and are conducting novena-prayers and liturgical services online for his eternal repose.

I hereby would like to express my sincerest sympathy and deepest condolences to the members of his family and to the Catholicgheez Medhane Alem community in Lodon. May the Lord welcome him as a good and faithful servant into the Heavenly Kingdom! May his soul rest in peace and let the perpetual light shine upon him!

Message of condolence

London 1st February 2021

On behalf of the Embassy of the State of Eritrea to UK & Ireland, it is with a heavy heart yet again we announce the loss of another valuable member of the Eritrean community.

We have learned that Father Kidane Lebasi, passed away while being cared for in hospital on the 31st of January 2021. Father Kidane better known as Abba Kidane was a much revered religious leader dedicating his life as a priest, teaching the word of God and performing sacred rituals. His work as a faith leader touched and changed many lives.

Father Kidane was also a dedicated member of the Eritrean community in the UK. Particularly in London, he was always at the forefront of any national and community activities. Father Kidane’s unwavering nationalist stance when it came to his home country Eritrea was always consummate.

As a firm nationalist he played his active role consistently and always called for his fellow Eritreans to reaffirm readiness to reinforce the national rebuff speaking with great patriotic zeal.

27 years back Father Kidane also founded and actively ran a successful supplementary school named Geeze Rite teaching extracurricular learning and mother tongue language Tigrinya. Father Kidane’s work in this sphere helped many of the younger generation connect with their culture and identity, also instilling faith and ethical values.

For those who over the years passed through the school and those who are still active in the school this terrible news will come heavy especially to the young generation who he cared for, loved and supported.

We sincerely hope that all his family, friends and the Eritrean community at large, find strength during this difficult time.

Dearest Abba Kidane

Thank you for all you have done for us individually and as a community. You came into our lives when we were lost in a foreign culture and gave us comfort in knowing that if we needed you, you would be there. Some of my earlier memories are coming upstairs after Church for coffee even though we just watched you guys drink coffee. The first invite came as a result of my sisters comment that if we had family we would be having Sunday Coffee and your response was izi daha intay alewo and you took us with you. I'm sure we were a nuisance but you tolerated us and welcomed us any time we came. You had no chance after the first invite, you were stuck with us :). I may not remember how many Sundays it was but I will forever remember how I felt. For that I Thank You.

May the Archangels, Angels and Saints welcome you in the name of God. Rest in Eternal Peace Abbatie and remember to still look out for us even though we may not deserve it.

Lots of Love, your loving daughter, sister, student.

I will miss giving you hugs 🤗 and seeing your smile but I have comfort knowing that you are with our Heavenly Father ❤

Today we mourn the passing of Father Kidane Lebasi. A man of great kindness and compassion, esteemed director of Gheez Rite Supplementary School. Who always put his pupils' wellbeing spiritual, emotional and physical at the front of everything the school did. Deeply missed RIP.

ather Kidane has been my friend since I was baptised by him. He taught me to have grace, humility and strength and always filled me with joy. He has touched the lives of many and has been selfless in his devotion to God and others - he has taught us to move in spirit over flesh and for that I will be eternally grateful.

him, his welcome for me was memorable. We were delighted that he co-celebrated our wedding service with Abrehet Asfeha, a memory that will live forever. His dedication to the service of the community was very evident and inspiring, he certainly lived God’s message of love, acceptance and inclusion, he will live in my memory and prayers.

Father Kidane: A life of service

Aba you have always been to me a great friend, a teacher, a pillar of support, a beloved spiritual father, a guide and a leader. This is a great loss for us, painful and difficult to believe that you are gone. There will never be enough words to describe Abba Kidane and his dedication and love. His life was a life of service to everyone he comes across. I will never be able to pay you enough tribute to describe your work with our community and how you touched us in all our lives.

Our work together in the school is something I will always cherish and a great example of your love for our community development. I will always remember how hard you worked for the school, day and night you poured in all your energy and your time to get the funding to keep the school going and to keep its standards and status to the highest level.

Your works will live as testimony for your legacy. Father Kidane, you occupied a huge space in our lives and your passage to heaven leaves an emptiness in our lives. May you continue to pray and bless us from heaven and may you continue to shine your usual beautiful smile with your maker in heaven! Abatie, we will sorely miss you and proudly and fondly remember you. You will always be in our hearts and our minds. Rest in Peace our good shepherd and a special friend Aba Kidane!
